Background
On Saturday, July 30th, 2022, I took the Gornergrat Bahn from the town of Zermatt, Switzerland then hiked all the way back down. To avoid the crowds and attempt to see the Matterhorn with less cloud cover, I took one of the earliest trains. There was substantial cloud cover when I got to the top so I had to wait a while until it started to clear up. It is important to monitor the weather and clouds in the summer to see the mountain properly.
Hiking down to Zermatt from the top of where the Bahn drops off takes about 4 hours. Almost the entire hike down is facing the Matterhorn. This enabled me to hike and see the clouds slowly dissipate. Along the way I ran into many sheep near a restaurant.
Zermatt is an interesting, beautiful, small town. There are essentially no cars, only small busses. This means, no stop lights or gas stations. Most people appear to arrive on the train. People get around in Zermatt on foot or by bike for the most part.
There are a few spots on the way down the mountain which enable one to get back onto the train into the town. I decided to go all the way back on foot however, to fully experience the area.
