Humboldt Peak

Background

On Monday, July 18th, 2022, I hiked to the summit of Humboldt Peak, a 14,070 foot high class 2 mountain in southern Colorado. The day before I camped in the parking lot at the upper 4WD, this area did not have a bathroom. In the morning, I hiked in with my tent and camping gear to an area near the lakes. It took about 3 hours to do so. There were many downed trees along the way once I got closer.

After I setup my campsite, I hiked to the summit of Humboldt Peak, from my campsite and back it took about 5 hours. There are marmots and goats in the area so it would be best to have stored my food out of my tent in a tree. Someone I met along the way had problems with wildlife attempting to eat their food. There are streams and lakes which can be used to filter water. I forgot my filter and had to use iodine tablets.

The reason for camping near the lakes was so that I could get an early start on Crestone Needle and Crestone Peak the following morning. There are camping spots all around the lakes, with some tree cover a bit below the lakes as this is near the treeline.
