Background
During a day trip from Anchorage, Alaska, I went out into Seward's Kenai Fjords National Park on Saturday, June 29th, 2019. I took a 6-hour boat tour which I booked through Alaska Railroad as part of the trip from Anchorage to Seward. They provided me the boat ticket in Anchorage with my train ticket. The schedule is pretty tight from arriving in Seward to getting on the boat, it is important to move quickly, take the shuttle and board the boat immediately upon arriving into Seward.
Kenai Fjords is known for its rock spires, glacier and wild life such as whales and seals. It is a great way to experience the park. When I went, there was a substantial amount of smoke from the Swan Lake fire so during the morning, the visibility was severely limited. I was unable to take in all of the views in the morning, visibility was about 2-3 miles. By mid-afternoon, much of the smoke cleared and I could see mountains in the distance.
I was surprised by how much of the glacier melted away and fell into the ocean in the 30-minutes or so of being next to it. This was caused by the heat during this time of year. Overall, I highly recommend the boat tour but it is best to go when there is not only good weather, but good visibility to get the most of it.
