About Mauna Kea

Maunua Kea is 13,802 ft above sea level and is the tallest mountain in Hawaii. It's also the tallest mountain in the world, when measured from the floor to the summit. Maunua Kea is an international observatory. Four-wheel drive is recommended to get to the top. Mauna Kea is a popular place to watch the sunrise and sunset in Hawaii.

My Impression

I started sea level and drove all the way to the top in a few hours. I stopped at the vistor center for about 30 minutes to acclimate. I drove to the top in a Hyundai Elantra taking several breaks along the way up and down to make sure the engine and breaks did not overheat. I went slow on a clear day with good visibility to achive this.

The top of the mountain is cold, you should bring layers of clothing. Much of the drive is on a dirt road. I had a bag of chips that I brought from sea level that popped (the seal broke) when I went to the top. There are incredible views from the summit when the sky is clear, it would also be a great place to see sunrise, sunset or the stars on a clear night.
