Mt. Yale

Last updated: January 28th, 2024

Background

I hiked to the summit of Colorado's Mt. Yale (14,199 feet) on Sunday, July 19th, 2020. The night before, I camped at Collegiate Peaks Campground in my car. The trailhead for Mt. Yale is only a few minutes drive from the campground to Denny Creek Trailhead, this is where one starts to reach the summit of Mt. Yale easily from the road. The parking lot was almost completely full at 6:45AM, this was perhaps even a late start at this time of year.

Overall, hiking to the summit of Mt. Yale was not difficult, the trail is clear. The weather turned at about 11AM at the summit, however. From that point on, there was hail, thunder, brief sun and then continuous rain all the way down the mountain. Make sure to bring gear for the weather and be prepared to scramble to the top.
