Svínafellsjökull Glacier

Impression

Svínafellsjökull is a glacier on the Southern side of Iceland. You can see it from the Ring Road (Route 1, which circles Iceland).

To get to the glacier you need to pull off onto a dirt road. Part of this road is public and part of it is private. Do not proceed onto the private road, it is operated by tour companies and there is limited space, which belongs to them.

If you want to walk close to the glacier, you can either park in a dirt lot near the private road sign or take a tour. The tours provide mountaineering gear to walk deep onto the glacier and depart nearby.

I did not feel compelled to join a tour or walk deep onto the glacier, I just walked from the public lot a short distance.
