The Sólheimasandur Plane Crash is a famous site on Iceland's black sand beach. Getting to the plane from the parking area takes about 45 minutes.

The plane crash site is very touristy, making it difficult to take a photo of the plane except at odd hours. The site has become so popular that it has attracted vandalism with people etching markings into the plane and even spray painting it.

The plane is an interesting sight to see despite being defaced and having dozens of tourists around it.

The plane belongs to the US Navy and it crashed on November 21st, 1973 with no fatalities. In route to Stokksnes, Iceland, severe icing was encountered and the plane made a forced landing on an ice covered river near the coast.
