Vikurfjara Black Sand Beach: Iceland’s Enigmatic Coastal Beauty
Vikurfjara Black Sand Beach, often overshadowed by its more famous counterpart Reynisfjara, is one of Iceland’s most spectacular coastal landscapes. Tucked away on the country’s southern shoreline near the village of Vík, this enigmatic beach boasts inky-black sands, dramatic cliffs, and roaring Atlantic waves. Offering both serenity and wild beauty, Vikurfjara is a destination that captivates travelers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
My Impression
In the village of Vík (Vik) is the Vikurfjara Black Sand Beach. It has basalt rocks that stick out of the ocean in the distance.
The rock formations are unique and provide an interesting landscape on the beach. I was able to walk along the beach without a problem.
The Location
Vík is located in southern Iceland. It's accessible from the Ring Road (Route 1, which circles the entire country). Google Maps location here.
Driving from Reykjavík to Vík by car takes about 2.5 hours.
Other Viewpoint
On the other side of Vikurfjara is Reynisfjöru (Reynisfjara) Black Sand Beach. It offers additional views of the basalt rocks with lava columns similar to those found at the Svartifoss waterfall. I did not know about this additional section of the black sand beach until after visiting Vikurfjara.
The Allure of Black Sand
One of the first things that strikes visitors to Vikurfjara is its arresting black sand.
