Chief Mountain, Colorado

Background

On Saturday, October 17th, 2020 around noon, I started hiking to the top of Chief Mountain. The mountain is near Idaho Springs, Colorado. There is no parking lot at the trailhead of this hike, instead cars park along the side of a steep road. Many cars, probably around 20 or more, were parked along the road when I went.

The hike is not difficult, it's about 3 miles round-trip and there is less than 1,000 feet elevation gain. The summit is 11,709 feet high. On the day I went, the wind speeds were between 20-40MPH with some wind gusts even faster. In the distance, it was possible to see smoke from a nearby fire.

On the summit, there are excellent views of the surrounding area. It is overall, an easy and very popular hike near Idaho Springs. For more trail details, see AllTrails.
