Handies Peak

Background

On Saturday, July 9th, 2022 I hiked Handies Peak, a 14,058 foot class 1 mountain in the San Juan mountain range of Colorado. The night before, I camped at Eureka Campground which is about 9,800 feet high. The drive to the American Basin trailhead from the campsite was about an hour and required a high clearance, 4WD vehicle to get through Cinnamon Pass.

Starting just before 9AM, the hike to the summit and back was about 3 hours and was about 5 miles long. This is the easiest 14,000 foot peak trail in the state of Colorado. People of all ages are on this trail.

Overall, this is an easy 14,000 foot peak but requires a difficult drive to get to from Cinnamon Pass. There are views of the surrounding San Juan mountains and also a lake plus wildflowers on the hike. It's a good hike to start with on a longer journey.
