Racetrack Playa

Impression

Racetrack Playa is home to "sailing stones" which are rocks that move when ice sheets crack apart after it rains. Getting to the playa is difficult, requiring good tires and a 4x4. The road to the playa is about 30 miles and is a washboard road. Without a Jeep, it's best to go about 10-15 miles an hour to avoid breaking an axle. There is no phone reception but there is a porta potty and campsite 2 miles after the playa.

It is important not to leave any trace on the playa and tread lightly. People have clearly left a mark on the playa and this is disappointing. It can take over an hour of walking to find untouched areas in the playa.
